Ed Kirtley is CEAT Assistant Dean of Outreach and the previous Director of OSU Fire Service Training. He is responsible for the administration of the development, delivery and evaluation of training and professional certification programs in Oklahoma. Ed was chief of the Guymon Oklahoma Fire Department from 1998 to 2004. Prior to going to Oklahoma, Ed was a member of the Colorado Springs Fire Department where he started as a fire fighter. He served as the Training Director for the department from 1994 to 1998. He was presented with the department’s Distinguished Service Award in 1998 for his contributions to the department and community.
He has also been involved with the National Fire Academy, participating in the development of numerous courses involving community education and community risk reduction. Most recently, he developed a unit on local politics for the Executive Fire Officer course Strategies for Community Risk Reduction. He also co-authored two U.S. Fire Administration manuals. He was twice recognized by the USFA for his contributions to the fields of fire safety education and risk reduction. He is currently the liaison between the North American Fire Training Directors and the National Fire Academy.
Ed has a Bachelors degree in management and a Masters degree in education. Ed is currently a member of the NFPA 1001 and NFPA 1035 committees. He served as the chair of NFPA 1035 for ten years and was recognized by NFPA in 2003 for his commitment to the professional qualifications process. He is a member of the North American Fire Training Directors, NFPA, International Association of Fire Chiefs, Oklahoma Fire Chiefs Association, India Shrine, and the Marine Corps League.
